Re: 1926 Peace dollar: "GOD"
Mynter: “…this one-year-type.” It is a one-year type, and why Krause has been so backward in recognizing that in their standard catalogs is something I’ve never understood. Any idea whether Schӧn gives the 1921 a separate catalog number? (I gave Numista a quick look and didn’t see anything.) Mynter:...

Chasing 1951 half-crowns
One last notebook entry from Edward's book before I put it away, accompanied by a piece of that superb (whitish) copper-nickel the British were producing in the early-1950s. I wonder what they were doing...maybe giving the planchets some sort of special treatment? Anyway... -------------------------...

1926 Peace dollar: "GOD"
I lucked into a decent 1921 Peace dollar and have been playing with it for two weeks solid. (The ;21 Peace is one of the most interesting coins in the entire American series) Along the way I learned something about the Peace dollars of 1926 that I cannot remember having read before—the word GOD in t...

Re: 1919 half-dollar: sheet music
I've always liked this coin. It grades a bit better than it looks, since the Walkers of 1921 and before had such lightly-cut skirt-lines. But that's really beside the point--it's just a good-looking coin, and I don't know exactly why. About the type's circulation, it is of course exactly as you say,...

1919 half-dollar: sheet music
x: In 1919—when this 1919 half-dollar was new—fifty cents was the price of the sheet music I’ve seen for a then-popular song, A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody . It’s a tune mentioned by the former King Edward VIII in his 1951 book, A King's Story: The Memoirs of H.R.H. the Duke of Windsor K.G. . Princ...

Mynter: "... found your remark on the older US- coins still circulating in a foreign military-camp quite interesting. By older coins you probably mean Walkers, Mercuries , Buffalos and Wheats ? What became to the older silvercoins when the american coinage was debased in 1965 ? Did they disapear at ...

Frage: Grünberg 75-pfennig
Can anyone please say from which Grünberg this piece originates? (Wikipedia puts one in Hesse, and also mentions one that was formerly a German town, but is now Polish.)

Frage: countermarked 1797 British penny
There’s a good bit of knowledge about the coinage of the British Empire, here on the Forum, so maybe… ----------------------------------------------- x: A near-basal 1797 British penny with a rather elegant “2” countermark on both obverse and reverse. As I pulled this coin from a five-for-a-dollar j...

Barbados 5-cent piece--echo of Victoria and Albert..
Was playing around with Barbadian coinage when I learned of this connection: x: On the reverse of this 2004 5-cent piece is the 89-foot-tall South Point Lighthouse, the oldest on Barbados. The cast-iron lighthouse was a feature of London’s Great Exhibition of 1851, then was disassembled and shipped ...
