I am still looking for a decent edwardian crown, really a nice piece, you are producing. May I contribute with a sovereign ? Bright and new and perhaps just elapsed from a bag remained unopend in a forgotten banksafe.
Really interesting that a part of the salary was paid using paper.In England no lesser denomination than 5 pounds was issued between 182x and 1914 when the redemption of banknotes into gold ceased. But of course, we are talking about Ireland here and obviuosly the many local banks existing into our days may have had the liberty to issue whatever they found right for the irish circulation.

The second chapter of Ulysses has more numismatic relations, so far undetected by Joyce-enthusiasts. In the office of the head-teacher is stored a tray of "Stuart coins" (maybe gun-money) and a bowl filled with kauri shells. Even more interesting are the names of two of Stephen's students: Comyn and Halliday. The editor of the german critical edition comments in both cases: No family of this name lived in Dublin 1904. - We will see the crowns when spent! - Unfortunately Joyce gives no better description of the pound notes.
