Cost info for Hindenburg nails?

Beitragvon villa66 » Mo 03.07.17 07:13

I saw this image of a postcard recently in a 1989 book (Great Battles of WWI) by Anthony Livesley. The accompanying caption explained that wooden statues of Hindenburg were set up in several WWI German cities (this one was in Berlin) and—for a price/contribution—a person could hammer a nail into the statue, helping to convert it into, finally, a statue of the “Iron Man.”

Can anyone please say how much money it cost a person to purchase a nail? I hope to tie the practice to a coin or coins.

(The postcard reproduced here is said to have cost 15 pfennig, by the way. Anyone know what it would have cost to send?)

Any help or information on this practice would be much appreciated….

 v.

P.S. The image at upper left is not part of the postcard.

The postage for a postcard within Germany was 5 Reichspfennig in the 1920-ies.

This amount was charged since at least 1900.

To Italy it was 15 Reichspfennig.

As for the nails, I suppose the charge for a single nail may have differed depending on the calculation of the exhibitor who displayed the statue and provided the nails. Shops didn't sell single nails but only in boxes similar to drawing-pins.

And finaly five Doppelkronen would buy you a golden nail ( or perhaps rather a guilded nail, as gold was called in for the war - effort )
