Frage: 1969 Swiss 5-franc

Beitrag von villa66 » Di 13.03.18 00:09

Can anyone please say why Switzerland, which switched to copper-nickel for the 1968 5-franc (and '68 1/2-, 1-, and 2-franc), switched back to silver for its 1969 5-franc coin?

Interesting question. Here is what I found ,cited from : Die Silbermünzenkrise der Schweiz von 1968

An¬

This is a great answer...vielen dank! (sorry to be so late.) Still working to get my mind around all this. The way the 5-franc departed from the LMU-fossil category in '31, and its consequence in the late-60s: the 1969 silver 5-franc piece.

But the 1968 5-franc in copper-nickel...I wasn't expecting that coin to be a star too. Coined as a fallback, just in case, with an uncertain--or maybe nonexistent--future. Seems to me that it belongs to a relatively small group of numismatic "bench-warmers" that includes Germany's aluminum 50-pfennig of 1935.

Again, great answer. Very useful. Thanks...

The pleasure is all mine. A very interesting question indeed. I never thought of the 1968- issue as a secret project for worse times to come. Though I wonder og not at least the commerce May have welcomed the cupronickel fiver, as this alloy perhaps was easierr to digest for the vending machines. At least this was the case in Germany, when the Silberadler was retired.

Again the delay--but my granddaughter has been a joy...just about 19 hours a day!

I have to ask--curiosity--is the reference to "retiring Silberadler" about color (aluminum 50rpf being replaced by the BRD kupfernickel 50pf), or a reference to metal (silber 1/2mk being replaced by Weimar aluminum-bronze or nickel 50rpf)?

No problem. Family first ! Would be sad the other way !
" Silberadler " was the nickname of the westgerman silver 5- DM minted from 1951 to 74,the coin itself being an icon of postwar prosperity. In 1975 it was replaced by a cupronickel fiver, or to be more correct by magnimat, a composition consisting of multiple layers of copper and cupronickel wich allowed vendingmachines to identify and verify the coins much easier. The latter was important, as the 5- DM allways was very attractive to counterfeiters due to the considerable buyingpower. Untill the end of the DM you could eat well for a day on a fivemark.

I am so glad I asked! Confirms my boyhood impression of the "Silberadler" (I took one out of circulation because I couldn't resist it--at great cost to my 10-year-old's budget--and these coins continued to gain meaning as I got older.)

But the magnimat thing reminded me of a common blindspot among American coin collectors: we often overlook the problem of counterfeiting when it comes to current, everyday coinage. (American circulating coinage is of such low face-value that counterfeiting really hasn't been a day-to-day problem for...I'd say a half-century at least. It's a shame, I think, that this should be so--I've long admired the high-value circulating coinage of other countries. But it's also true that I haven't really appreciated how difficult it can be to maintain their effectiveness.)

So magnimat...of course. Which must also be the answer to another question I've wondered about for a long time: why was the Planck 2DM withdrawn when it's the same size, weight and has the same outward appearance (metal-wise) as the Adenauer and subsequent 2DM coins? Answer: vending machines, electrical signatures, and counterfeiting....

Danke, Mynter. And I have some rewriting to do. Fun!

An other interesting (and somewhat weird :)) fact is that there are a few silver 1968-"Fünfliber". The hypothesis goes that there were a couple of silver planchets left at the end of 1967. These spare pieces were used up in 1968. The difference between these silver 1968ers and the copper 1968ers is the weight. The former weigh 15 g, the latter 13,2 g.

Here is an example of such a really rare silver 1968er - it was auctioned for 9500 Swiss francs: https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?p=lot&sid=282&lot=77

By the way: Some 1968ers are silver-plated. There must have been some guys manipulating the official coins 8O

Thanks for this, Rezo. It's actually very familiar territory for American collectors--not the Swiss connection, of course, which is new to me and intensely interesting--but the 1943 American steel cent and its associated '43 bronze errors have been widely publicized.

Overlooked bronze planchets remaining in coin-presses used for the 1942 coinage are thought to be the reason for the '43 bronze error cents. And since they sell for upwards of $100K, there are many, many fakes--most of them copper-plated efforts that a single second with a magnet will detect. But there are many altered bronze Lincolns, some of which are more difficult to flush out.

Anyway, thanks again for the connection; it's in my notebook already.
