Re: Post-layoff junk-box.

...Here our last serious coin dealer closed his shop some months ago.... I’m sorry to hear there are no coin shops near you, KAM. They’re such handy places for letting off steam. Even the bad ones. Maybe even especially the bad shops—there’s nothing like a good rip to brighten a week. (As opposed t...

Re: Post-layoff junk-box.

Nice pieces indeed ! If that was the junk, I would like to see the top-shelf- items. Aha! A near-perfect excuse to show off something else I bought that day—after the junk-box of course (first things first!). Not from the top-shelf, but maybe one of the middle ones, this 1856 half-cent, coined the ...

Post-layoff junk-box.

After a month or so of being closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the area coin dealers have reopened. I was curious—I wondered if perhaps dealers would use any of the enforced down-time to clean out their cabinets. If yes—or so I reasoned—it would make junk-boxes more interesting for a while…. ...

Between-the-wars: 1932 Panama 5-centesimos

Between-the-wars. This 1932 5-centesimo piece was coned at the American mother-mint in Philadelphia and shipped south to Panama, site of what was then perhaps the United States’ most prized overseas possession—the Panama Canal. Certainly it was at the center of American defensive planning. The Japan...

Re: 1926 Peace dollar: "GOD"

You’ve raised several interesting points of departure, coinnuttius, but I’d better just stick with my original focus—that the Standing Liberty quarters of 1917-1924 should have a different KM catalog number from those of 1925-1930. When I posted the two pictures of the 1920 and the 1930 side-by-side...

Re: 1926 Peace dollar: "GOD"

First please let me say I appreciated the thoughtfulness of your post…. It was fun to see your use of “Buffs,” which reminded me of my own moment’s hesitation when I used “Buffalo nickel.” I knew I was breaking the three rules insisted on by the purists, but “Buffalo nickel.” is how I learned it as ...

KM orientiert sich eher am offensichtlichem Design und Material.... No—with respect—I don’t think that’s the problem here. (I’ve spent a lot of time over the years puzzling out the slenderest of design differences between coins with different KM numbers, and have vehemently objected to their someti...

Re: Edward VII and loose change. Not.

Danke, KAM, for the terrific answer. Sparked a lot of reading, and reminded me that another (unofficial) national anthem was using that same tune that same day in 1909: the U.S., for "My Country Tis of Thee." The story of the 1922 German change in anthems is just full of interesting twists and turns...

Re: Pegasus 10-lire, for fun.

Thanks for the kind words, Erdnussbier. And I share your high opinion of the ’73 Greek 10-drachma. In the metal these coins seem very clean and crisp—uncluttered too. Definitely a good-looking coin. (Now that you’ve reminded me of it, I’ll have something else to give to my grand-daughter for her jew...

Pegasus 10-lire, for fun.

I pulled a “Pegasus” 10-lire from my duplicates for my grand-daughter because it was the closest thing to a unicorn that I had. (Her ultimate compliment these days is to call someone a “rainbowy unicorn.”) While I was playing around I checked into my notebook entries for these coins…. --------------...

Re: 1926 Peace dollar: "GOD"

Danke, klaupo…and good for Schon! While I’m at it, I’ve got one more question along the same lines. So would someone please be kind enough to say whether Schon assigns a separate catalog number to the Standing Liberty quarters of 1925-1930? The last time I looked, Krause was still failing to do this...
