2008 South African "Mandela" 5-rand

On the occasion of his 90th birthday in 2008, Nelson Mandela was the subject of this bimetallic 5-rand coin struck by South Africa. Former South African President Mandela—what an inconceivable reality that was once—was born 18 July 1918 and died late last week on 5 December 2013, at age 95.

In the brief time since his death we have seen plenty of tears, but they seem almost outnumbered by the incredible displays of happiness, of joy even, at the simple fact that Nelson Mandela had lived.
