I saw this image of a postcard recently in a 1989 book (
Great Battles of WWI) by Anthony Livesley. The accompanying caption explained that wooden statues of Hindenburg were set up in several WWI German cities (this one was in Berlin) and—for a price/contribution—a person could hammer a nail into the statue, helping to convert it into, finally, a statue of the “Iron Man.”
Can anyone please say how much money it cost a person to purchase a nail? I hope to tie the practice to a coin or coins.
(The postcard reproduced here is said to have cost 15 pfennig, by the way. Anyone know what it would have cost to send?)
Any help or information on this practice would be much appreciated….

P.S. The image at upper left is not part of the postcard.
