[New Member] 1 Mark 1898A NGC

Beitrag von dcordeiro » Di 13.01.15 11:38

Hello,

I just registered given that (im a portuguese coin collector) since the last two years I have been creating a collection of german coins (2,3,5Mk) from the period between 1872-1918. I already have around 43 german states PCGS graded coins...LOL I went to the coin fair in munich in 03/2013 and came back wanting to buy 1 coin per month... its not been even 2 years and I already have 43!!!

The reason im sending this message is that I need to understand the rarity of a certain coin I found and had certified (by NGC).

The infamous 1 Mark 1898 A

How rare is this coins in "St"/FDC condition? I see that mine is the only one ever certified by NGC or PCGS.

Can you try to get me some info on the rarity of this coin?

Are the prices in this following link reflecting the true value of this coin (not taking the certification part into consideration) ?

Best Regards
David

Hello,
the minting figure for the 1898 A 1 mark is 1.000.000, wich is rather low for being Berlin. In a MS condition the coin is most certainly even scarcer, the price for a top grade specimen according to my Jaeger catalogue is about 220 euros. I do not dare to tell wether or not this price can be accieved, when it comes to the standard coinage, most german coin collectors are happy with a decent speciemen at a lower price. But anyway, there is a certain charme to rareties.
Grüsse, Mynter

Hi,
such coins are rarely traded. So it's difficult to find prices. Here is another catalogue price though:

400€ in 2012.

Thanks for the feedback.

So... given the fact that we are talking about a scarce coin, maybe even rare in MS (this one came out an MS65 and its the single coin graded either by PCGS or NGC) I also was pointing towards the 350 to 400€ value.

Obviously it all depends on the ratio "wanting to sell vs the willigness of the buyer to have it graded". Thats what more or less determines the sale price of it... not the value.

But overall, you would consider this coin has a hard one to find in MS (graded or not) right?

Very much indeed. The standard coinage of the Empire never drew as much attention as the 2, 3 and 5 marks and the goldpieces. At their time they were simply small change. german collectors started to discover the mark currency in about 1888 , the so- called " year of the 3 emperors ", when especialy the coins of Friedrich III accieved high premiums as collector items. But even then it was allmost entirely the large silvers the collectors wished for. Today most coins from 1 pfennig up to 1 mark are hard to find in MS. And as for the 2 and 5 marks issued before 1900, they are rather scarce in good condition as well.
Grüsse, Mynter
