GOETZ: K-75 City of Leipzig

Beitrag von Bronzemonger » So 18.03.07 01:17

K-75, 1913, Battle of Leipzig Centenary, Struck Silver, 40mm, UNC, RR

To commemorate the City of Leipzig's Battle of Nations Centennial 1813-1913.

Obverse: Wilhelm II half-length portrait right, in armor (per Renaissance medal by Deschler of Georg Tetzel the Elder) with sword and scroll. WILHELM II German Kaiser along rim.

Reverse: Victory marching with German eagle left.

Leipzig, largest city in Saxony, was the site of the Battle of Nations on 18 October, 1813. Saxony's King Friedrich August I was allied to Napoleon against most other German states in this epic battle.

A beautiful medal. But the portrait of Wilhelm II with the Renaissance style armour is anachronistic to both dates. Contemporanean critics of Wilhelm II thought him being anachronistic, too. (Leipzig was not, is not and won't ever be the capital of Saxony.) Cheers from Dresden, KarlAntonMartini
