The U.S. is having a rather strenuous public discussion about our “debt ceiling,” and the deadline is very near, and Congress is very divided. The matter has become so urgent that the search for possible solutions has become extremely....ingenious.
About the politics I will happily say nothing. But one of the possible solutions being suggested has a numismatic dimension that is impossible to be quiet about....
Because the mint has the legal authority to strike platinum coins with denominations of its own choosing, it has been suggested that two platinum coins be struck, each denominated at “one-trillion-dollars” ($1,000,000,000,000), and then deposited in the U.S. Treasury.
