Our shared hobby is full of light, and fun. But occasionally there’s some darkness hiding in our little darlings. Here’s one with some pain and ugliness attached to it, an American bus token issued about 1948 by Jackson City Lines of Jackson, Mississippi.

"Jim Crow" and enforced racial segregation. Whites in the front seats, blacks in back. Humiliation for some, every day. This little transit token will have seen it all. And been a part of it too.

Jackson’s city buses were finally desegregated in late 1960, some years after the U.S. Supreme Court had decided the cases that said it should be so.
