Re: Pfennig 13. Jahrhundert ...
Hello Vlcoin, Nikino + stw01,
Nikino is right, this coin is definetely a coin from the monastery of CORVEY, and of course there was a SIMON zur Lippe,
Bishop of Paderborn, Tutor of CORVEY minting in CORVEY and also in HÖXTER (CURBEIA + HOXTERE).
It is not completely clear, if the coin was minted under SIMON I zur Lippe 1247 - 1277, Bishop of Paderborn.
AVERS:
A sitting abbot, in the right hand showing a crosier (Krummstab), in the left a book.
AVERS: * SANCTA (CVRBEIA)
REVERS:
The holy saint VITUS in full, holding a cross in the right, a lily in the left.
REVERS:
The inscription shows right of the saint:
SA
NC
TV
S
and left of the saint:
VI
TV
S
o
The relics of the roman saints and martyrs VITUS and MODESTUS were in the middle ages a magnet for many pilgrims,
which were praying in CORVEY near their shrines.
This coin is listed under Weingärtner No.26
Weingärtner No. 31 shows a picture of a bishop and the following inscription on the AVERS:
+ SIMON EPISC
with the same picture of the saint and the same inscription on the REVERS.
and was really minted under SIMON zur Lippe, Bishop of PADERBORN, Tutor of CORVEY.
With kind regards
Captain Freddy
