Determination help unknown Denar / Pfennig

Beitrag von pinpoint » So 16.05.10 15:10

Friendly ask for help to determinate this unknown German Denar / Pfennig !

One member of our Dutch metaldetecting Forum found this beautifull Medival coin .

We can 't exactly determinate this coin . We think it is a : Pfennig , Königliche Reichsmunzst. Aachen , Friedrich II ( 1215 - ? ) or Wilhelm von Holland ( 1247-1256)

Any info of this coin is welcome !

Thanks and greetz from The Netherlands , Pinpoint

Hoi Frederick , thanks for your help !

We found this match on MA Shops already by ourselfs ! but anyone of these matches shows the letter E or F ,who you can see on our coin ( foto unter) .
We think it is probably de letter F from FREDERIC ( ?)
Maybe someone with the Saurmasche Münzsammlung Catalog can give us the right info .
Unfortunately there is no access in this Catalog anymore on Internet .

Hi Pinpoint,

Aachen is right.
Those coins were struck there in the names of Friedrich II. (1215-1250), Wilhelm von Holland (1247-1256) and Richard von Cornwallis (1257-1271).
As they all look nearly the same, it's almost impossible to determine them exactly if the inscription can't be read.
Fortunately your coin shows the "FR..." of "FRIDERIC'+".
Well, there is a coin of Wilhelm that shows the name FRIDERIC, too, but then the other side should show the name "+WILLELM'REX". So those coins can be ones of Wilhelm, even if they show FRIDERIC on one side. But I think I can read the reverse inscription INP[ERATOR] and so it's a coin of emperor Friedrich II.
If the weight is about 1g or more, it is a denar.
Literature: Krumbach 57; Menadier 62

Regards,
Peter

@upuaut oder einen anderen Mod: Dieses Thema sollte ins Mittelalter verschoben werden, denn ich denke, dort passt es besser hin.
