Mein Brief an die EU-Kommission:
Dear Mrs. Bienkowska!
I'm adressing this letter to you as Commissioner of the European Internal Market. I'm concerned about the new law for protection of cultural goods (Kulturgutschutzgesetz) which is planned by the German state secretary Dr. Monika Grütters. This law expands the export restrictions which until today are applied to the non-EU-countries to all EU-countries too. According to the planned law all cultural goods older than 50 years and worth over 2500.- are defined as national cultural goods and are allowed to be exported only after the control of administrative bodies or not at all. This law builds a wall around Germany which would not only make difficult the free trade with cultural goods in the hands of collectors, like porcelain, jewelry, paintings, coins and so on, but partially impossible too. With it one of the most fundamental objectives of the European Union, the free internal market, would be levered out. I think you have already heard of this project which bother German artists, collectors, auction houses and museums. The media have reported that the famous German artist Baselitz has already withdrawn his paintings from the museums to protect them against the grip of the state. I think that the planned law offends the EU treaty. What do you think about it?
Yours sincerely
Hans-Joachim Hoeft, collector
