Schöne, seltene bzw. interessante Münzen des Gordianus III

Heute von mir zwei starke Herren im Doppelpack - der As leider grob gereinigt, der Antoninian dafür um so schöner: VIRTVTI AVGUSTI - Reverse

I would never call a coin "unique" just because its dies had been previously unknown to me.

In the first place, I know that my material only covers a small proportion of all that survives. There are many museum collections I haven't visited, and a huge amount of material in sale catalogues or passing through eBay that I haven't integrated into my files.

Second, I don't consider "new dies" an important enough feature to call "unique". "Unique" should imply something more important, a new type or at least a new date, legend variant, or bust type.

I am always pleased and interested to find new dies, especially in a smaller issue where most dies are already well known, but I just call the discovery "new dies", adding perhaps "the fourth rev. die known for this type".

The important variant for this coin is the revers ORIENS AVS instead of ORIENS AVG this is clearly an unique variant! ant the legend variant is what you call important

Sorry, I agree that HJK's ORIENS AVS antoninianus is interesting and can be called unique.

I mistakenly thought you were talking about Gabriel's IOVI STATORI As, not noticing your salutation to HJK.

Congratulation ga77, it's the 1st specimen I know in private collection! others specimens I know are Vienna, British museum and Copenhagen!

Georges His got 1 specimen too so this one is the 6th specimen I know

Thank you for the additional Information, another one can be found in Lanz Graz, Auction IV, lot 658 (Hohenkubin Collection) - Although it is possible that the specimen of the BM originally came from the very same Auction.

RIC 300c sollte das sein. Natürlich selten wie alle Dupondien von Gordian III. Nicht gerade der häufigste Typ, aber auch nicht superselten würde ich sagen.
