<grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!>

I have been monitoring the discussion, so I am aware of what has been said. First off, it is very important that people understand that AJ is technically only part-time with CNG, and the time he is here is only to work on CNG infrastructure projects. His work with CA is totally separate. In light of that, you can understand that CNG cannot make a public statement, as simply doing so would give an inaccurate perception that CNG and CA are somehow linked as businesses. Now, I do know a good deal about what is going on, and there are some important points that should be known. First, the long list of dealers appearing on the main page of the CA site should not be interpreted as being monetary contributers; this was the list of data contributors. Only those dealers who paid to have banner advertisements actually contributed money, and the quantity of them varied from time to time, but never was this more than 8 or 10 at one time. Second, AJ devotes
almost all of his non-CNG time (and I am not exaggerating, I do mean most of his free time, too) to maintaining the CA site. Third, AJ understands the value of CA to the academic community, and while I don't know when or how he would address this issue, it is my belief that something will be done about that aspect of his audience. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, I have heard that some of the auction firms exerted great pressure over the years to make the site have fee-only access, and that they were instrumental in this change happening, and AJ should be lauded for convincing them to allow at least some of it to remain free.
The bottom line is that AJ has taken great care in considering this significant change to the CA site, and his employment with CNG had absolutely nothing to do with it. Some of the posts I have read are painting him quite unfairly and are very irresponsible. People need to keep in mind that many small dealers have used CA for research in lieu of investing in their own research library, and this is no good reason to lambaste AJ for this change. In fact, 600 dollars is a minuscule amount to invest in a numismatic library each year. At the same time, the people crying the most on the list have to keep in mind the amount of time AJ has been investing for free, and he cannot be expected to keep this up--I'd love to know how many of the people crying out on the Moneta list would work for free for 40+ hours a week?
In any event, I know what I've written is of interest to many on the list, so please feel free to paraphrase or even post the content of this email to the list, if you want. I just ask that you say you received this from someone inside CNG, without naming me personally.

Valete,
Iulia
