Hi, Just a quick question regarding Weimar coins.
What is the significance of the Hay Bail (?) on the 1 & 2 Rpf, and the Wheat on the 5 & 10 Rpf coins?
Danke

Hi Zaggy,
hay bail and wheat stand as symbolism for the fact, that the new curreny (first known as "Rentenmark") which was introduced end 1923 was based on primarily agricultural and natural resource bonds. The design adopted the die image of the aluminium 50 Pfennig of 1919.
(Source, Walter Grasser, "Münzen des Mittelalters und der Neuzeit", Heyne - München, 1976, page 193, ISBN 3-453-41143-9 - paperback - out of print)
In 1919 there was no plan, what national arms should be used for the new Republic, so they took the hay bail just as a neutral symbol.
A similar symbolism was used for the new paper money starting in 1923, showing farming people in rural scenes
BTW: don't forget the other copper and brass coins like 50 RPfs
regards
Stefan

I know about the Oak Leaves. They show up on pretty much EVERYTHING
But what I was saying is, that by 1933, and until the third reich redesigned the 50Rpf, the Weimarer 50Rpf was already in Nickel and the wheat design had been replaced...
But whilst we're on the Subject, is there any good reference for the symbolic meanings of the designs on German coins? A lot of the stuff is obvious, but other things (like my earlier question about the wheat and hay that you were so kind to answer) are no so obvious. The book you have mentioned, like most good German books, I have been unable to find yet..
Thanks again Petzlaff
