1945 Canadian 5-cent piece

Canada’s “Victory” 5-cent piece dated 1945, 21.3mm in diameter at its corners, 20.9mm in diameter side-to-side, with a weight of 4.54g. These coins (of the 1944-45 type) were struck on chromium-plated nickel-plated steel planchets, except that because the metal strips had to be blanked after the two plating operations, the edges of these pieces went unplated—and the consequent bare steel edges were vulnerable to rust.

So Canada never did fully solve the problems of its wartime 5-cent pieces. The species of brass known as tombac, used in the 1942 Beaver type and the 1943 Victory type, proved unsatisfactory in service it was said—and it was also said that they used copper and zinc needed for other war uses. Employing the ’43 design, then, came these 5-cent pieces of 1944-45.

The “V for Victory” motif of these coins is certainly a nod to Churchill’s famous gesture, but of course the V has a dual meaning here, and is said to also have been inspired by the American “V (5-cent) nickel” of 1883 1912.

This wartime amalgam owes at least one more design debt—more obvious in the tombac of ’43—its 12-sided format, originally adopted to aid in differentiating the coin from the country’s bronze cents but carried over in these plated-steel coins of ’44-45, derives from the brass UK 3-pence that debuted in 1937.

“We win when we work willingly” is the message in the dots and dashes around the reverse rim of these coins, and the promise…well…this bright and shiny 1945 5-cent piece looks every bit the “Victory” coin it was intended to be.

By Autumn it was Peace. Peace for the first time in six years. In 1946 Canada’s 5-cent piece would revert to its usual Beaver reverse, and its composition would return to peacetime nickel.
