Die 1940 Hälfte Krone ist viel günstiger Souvenir des Ereignisses als die expensive(!) Waitangi Krone, aber wenn 1940 die Centennial des Vertrags, warum die Krone 1935 datiert wurde? Offenbar da die ' 35-Krone bestimmt war nicht, um die Centennial das Ereignis, sondern vielmehr das Ereignis selbst zu feiern. Die Krone hatte, Neuseelands inaugural Münzwesen von 1933 begleiten vorgesehen worden, aber Design Verzögerungen gelitten hatte–-und dann die Silberjubiläum des George V ein serendipitous aussehen 1935.
Die 1940 Centennial Hälfte Krone erschien einem kritischen Moment in der Geschichte Neuseelands. Ereignisse andernfalls herausstellte hatte, könnte der fröhlichen Optimismus, die von dieser Münze ausgestrahlten heute als traurig und zutiefst ironische kolonialen Hybris gesehen werden. The centennial of Britain’s annexation of New Zealand is the subject of this 1940 half crown with the outstretched arms of a welcoming Maori maiden. Although it doesn’t mention the event directly (like the ’35 crown), this cheerfully attractive silver piece marks the centennial of the 1840 signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.
The 1940 half crown is a much more affordable souvenir of the event than the expensive(!) Waitangi crown, but if 1940 was the centennial of the Treaty, why was the crown dated 1935? Apparently because the ’35 crown wasn’t intended to celebrate the centennial of the event, but rather the event itself. The crown had been intended to accompany New Zealand’s inaugural coinage of 1933, but had suffered design delays—and then the Silver Jubilee of George V made a serendipitous appearance in 1935.
The 1940 Centennial half crown appeared at a critical moment in New Zealand’s history. Had events turned out otherwise, the cheery optimism broadcast by this coin might today be seen as sad and profoundly ironic colonial hubris. But New Zealand, the British Empire—and this 1940 commemorative half crown—“muddled through.”
