Wer war Terry Fox ?
Terrance Stanley Fox (Juli 28, 1958 - Juni 28, 1981) war ein kanadischer Athlet.
Er wird als einer von Kanadas größten Helden des 20. Jahrhunderts betrachtet und ist die Nummer 2 auf der Liste „The Greatest Canadian“.
Terry Fox wurde in Winnipeg, Manitoba/Kanada geboren und in Portcoquitlam, British-Columbia/ Kanada beigesetzt.
Nachdem er sein Bein in Folge von einer Knochenkrebserkrankung verloren hatte, entschied der junge Athlet, von Küste zu Küste zu laufen, um Geld für die Krebsforschung zu sammeln.
Symbolisch tauchte er zu Beginn seines Laufes an der Küste St. Johns/Neufundland sein künstliches Bein in den Atlantik – mit dem Ziel vor Augen, es in Vancouver/British Columbia am Ende seines Laufes in den pazifischen Ozean zu tauchen.
Terry Fox lief täglich 42 Kilometer – die Distanz eines typischen Marathons.
Diese Strecke lief er 143 Tage lang – täglich.
Das Guinneß Buch der Weltrekorde verzeichnet Rick Worley als Rekordhalter im Marathon er lief 200 Marathonstrecken, aber auf 159 nachfolgenden Wochenenden verteilt.
Niemand hat sich bisher einer ähnlichen Anstrengung gestellt, die Fox mit seinem Lauf auf sich genommen hat.
Beenden konnte es seinen Lauf jedoch nicht. Nahe „Thunder Bay“ hatte der Krebs auch seine Lungen befallen und nach über 5300 Kilometern quer durch Neufundland, Quebec und Ontario musste er seinen Lauf abbrechen.
Wenige Monate später starb er im Alter von 22 Jahren.
Sein „Marathon of Hope“ (Marathon der Hoffnung) hat jedoch die Aufmerksamkeit der Nation geweckt. Terry Fox wurde zum Nationalhelden, und die jährlichen Terry Fox Lauf-Ereignisse in Kanada, in den Vereinigten Staaten und in vielen anderen Ländern der Welt, haben dazu beigetragen mehr als 360 Millionen Dollar für Krebsforschung zu stiften.

ROYAL CANADIAN MINT ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR TERRY FOX DOLLAR
(TORONTO) – The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) today announced plans for a commemorative Terry Fox circulation coin that will begin circulating on April 4, 2005, just in time for the 25th anniversary of the Marathon Of Hope.
The coin will be unveiled on March 14, 2005, at an event in Vancouver, British Columbia.
"The Terry Fox coin speaks directly to the heart of all Canadians, and its message is one of hope. The entire staff of the Mint takes great pride in crafting this accessible symbol that celebrates one of the truly remarkable individuals of our time", said

Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope run in St. John’s, Newfoundland on April 12, 1980. For 143 days Terry ran the equivalent of a marathon (42 kilometers / 26 miles) every day. His strength and determination turned an otherwise ordinary teenager into a national hero and launch an ongoing campaign that has raised more than $360 million dollars for cancer research.
