SH1305 (1926) Afghanistan 1-afghani

A second-year example of Afghanistan’s new decimal currency, the afghani (of 100 pul), this SH1305 (1926) 1-afghani was struck in Kabul of .900 silver, has a diameter of 29mm, and weighs 10.00g. The mint at Kabul had received its British machinery more than thirty years before, so perhaps it was showing its age when this piece was coined. Maybe not. But whatever the reason, this unevenly struck 1926 1-afghani is a deeply flawed piece of work.

Afghanistan became a Kingdom the year this coin was struck, and Amanullah Khan—Emir since 1919 (see the coin’s regnal year “8”)—became its King.

By the time this 1926 1-afghani was coined, King Amanullah was trying to modernize his country after the fashion of Mustafa Kemal Pasha in next-door Turkey. (Note on this coin, for instance, the use of the recently introduced calendar based on the solar year instead of the traditional lunar year.)

A conservative backlash would soon catch up with King Amanullah, however, and he would be forced to abdicate early in 1929 in the face of widespread public revolt. Many of Amanullah’s initiatives would be reversed—this coin’s solar dating among them—but while many of the reversals would stick, the solar calendar would soon return to Afghan coinage.

The former King Amanullah would not return, however. He died in Switzerland, still in exile, in 1960.
