By the way, the Swedish coin refers to the 1632 battle of Lützen,Germany where King Gustaf Adolf got killed in action.
There are quite some German commemorative medals on it, probably Swedish ones as well.

A happy accident is all. But the causal chain was some fun itself, so please(!) indulge me….

I was listening to some Italian friends discuss Italian pattern coins. A pattern popped up in the discussion that absolutely floored me—it was, in effect, an Irish “Bull” shilling of the 1928 type, but with a fasces in the exergue, and attributed to a designer I didn’t remember being part of the Irish design competition.

It made me curious so I went back to reread Yeats’ account of the competition. This time I noticed that one of the coins the committee had been attracted to was a particular Swedish 2-kronor. I wanted the coin, but when I found one, in the deal another 2-kronor came with it—the ’32 Gustav II Adolf. So I read a little about him.

Something like a year later I happened across the ’32 Estonian 2-krooni. I did some reading about the coin’s subject, Tartu University, and when I learned that Gustav II Adolf was credited with founding the institution, that ’32 Swedish 2-kronor came immediately to mind.
