Hallo werte Sammlerkollegen!

Dazu Curtis Clay:
From memory, my copy being at home:
A massive work, two volumes of text and one of plates.
Arranged by bust type: a chapter on the laurel wreath, one on the radiate crown, one on the aegis, one on the nimbus, one on consular robes, and so on. Many of these bust types Bastien had treated earlier in journal articles, here (I assume) he repeats and expands those earlier treatments.
The plates helpfully illustrate not only many examples of each bust type on coins from various reigns, but also, for comparison, marble busts of emperors wearing the same attributes.
Certainly a useful work to consult for any question about bust types, but far from the final word! On such a vast topic, and working mainly from published catalogues, Bastien was bound to overlook or misdescribe innumerable interesting details.
B. Woytek, for example, in his excellent new monograph on the coinage of Trajan, devotes 18 pages to a discussion of bust types under Trajan, and must make at least a dozen important corrections or additions to Bastien's monograph.
