Hallo Leute,

Re: Sesterz oder As ?

Re: Sesterz oder As ?
The rarity of Domna's sestertii parallels the rarity of the sestertii of the contemporaneous emperors, except that only one type at a time was being struck for her as empress, as opposed to (usually) four types in about the same volume for the emperors.
So, as for the emperors, her sestertii are scarce from 193-196 (yours is of 194), rare from late 196-early 198, very rare from 198 to 209, scarce again from 210 to 215, and very rare from late 215-217.
DOMNA / IVNO REGINA sestertii in my 1972 die catalogue: 22 specimens, from 7 obv. and 12 rev. dies.
Your coin is from my obv. die 417, rev. die 606, Cat. no. 1683, specimens in Royal Dutch Coll. and Basel 1, 1934, 1650.
This IVNO REGINA type of 194 acts very strangely, appearing on no other denomination but sestertii and on the sesterii apparently interrupting another type, VESTA seated, which was struck both before and after IVNO REGINA. It doesn't look like part of the planned type sequence for Domna, so I suggested that maybe these dozen or so IVNO REGINA sestertius dies were originally cut for Manlia Scantilla in 193, and were saved at the mint until 194 when they were irregularly put to use for Domna. I haven't yet observed a case of the same rev. die being used first for Scantilla and then for Domna, however.
EDIT: The IVNO REGINA type does occur on rare DOMNA dupondii too. On my theory these dupondius dies too will have been taken over from Manlia Scantilla.
