The Argentina 2-centavos of 1882-1896; has anyone seen or heard of any of these coins being overstruck on some other similarly-sized copper or bronze coin?
================================================
And for critique (not knowing much about Argentine coins), I post this entry I just now made in my notebook:
x: An 1893 2-centavo piece with some wear—and like so many of these coins—rim dings. Its much-less-than-nice condition seems at odds with what I’ve read about these coins being retired just a few years after this piece was minted. (Both they and the 1-centavo were demonetized 1 January 1896, which also seems a little odd—both coins were apparently still being produced in 1896.) But I don’t know…maybe the rim dings and the wear aren’t so unexpected on a big coin like this. It circulated during a time when coins in general got a real workout, and too, these big (30mm, 10g) coppers are LMU clones, so maybe they worked in places beyond Argentina’s borders, perhaps for some years after the Argentinians had pensioned them off.
