"pfennig curioso" at Lamoneta.it "Monete Estere"

For anyone registered at the Italian Forum, Lamoneta.it, in the "Monete Estere" section there is a topic : "1 pfennig curioso."

It's an interesting, puzzling, encased Bundesrepublik pfennig, and perhaps someone from its home country can help unravel the mystery?

Für Diejenigen, die nicht auf die Bilder warten möchten gebe ich mal eine kurze Beschreibung des Stücks wieder.

Es handelt sich um ein vergoldeten 1 Pfennig 1950 D welcher in eine Einfassung eingepasst wurde, die vermutlich aus einem 3 Mark Stück des Kaiserreiches hergestellt wurde (Randschrift GOTT MIT UNS, Arabesken und Kreuz).
Die Oberfläche des 3 Mark Stückes wurde plan geschliffen und folgende Daten eingraviert ( im Uhrzeigersinn):

6. 9. 1940 * 14. 5. 1942 * 16. 9. 1946

9. 9. 1913 - 10 9. 1893 / 1953 / 100 Jahre

Danke for the help. The idea of a 3-mark being used is very interesting, and in itself is worth having asked here for help. I have permission to post the pictures, but am having some difficulties. I hope it won't be too terribly long.

In the meantime, I continue to ask if those folks who are registered at Lamoneta.it (and can therefore access images) would take a look and share any thoughts about the piece. Again, thanks...

Es sind Geburtsdaten, 1913 wurde die Frau geboren, 1893 der Mann, im Jahr 1953 wurden sie zusammen 100 Jahre alt. Zusammen haben sie auch 3 Kinder (Geburtsdaten stehen auf der anderen Seite). Wurde also zu ihren Geburtstagen im September 1953 hergestellt und sehr wahrscheinlich von den Kindern verschenkt.

I ask further:

1) Is this a familiar item, available for ordering for anniversaries or some other occasion? The pfennig has a München mintmark; perhaps in that area?

2) Is there a particular reason a three-mark coin was used as the surround? Or a pfennig in the center? As a symbol of good luck, perhaps? (I ask here for any applicable insight into German custom and coin meaning.)

3) The 1950 1-pfennig was struck with a frozen date? Did the minting continue after 1953?

Any help is most welcome, and will be passed along to my friend...and, of course, you all are invited to visit Lamoneta and join in the discussion directly.

yes , the coin inside is for "luck" ("Glückspfennig") .
that the coin is from the munic mint , thats no sign for the area , the coins circulated the whole german area ...

Danke deje; "Glückspfennig" has now been added to the current vocabulary of the Italian coin forum . As the conversation on Lamoneta has progressed, a question was asked: Why, since the date of the commemoration was 1953, was it a 1950-dated pfennig that was used? The reply....

"The West German 1-pfennig coin had changed designs in 1950, but was being coined with a 'frozen' date. Unfortunately for the souvenir-maker, there was no 1953-dated Glückspfennig available. (The 1950 coin was the newest possibility.)

"An additional dimension here is the East/West divide...there was a 1953 1-pfennig coined by East Germany. So I guess we know which side of the Wall this family lived in ’53. (I note also the 1-pfennig used has a Munich mintmark, so perhaps that gives a further clue to the family’s location. Or perhaps not. But there is, in multi-mint countries, often a geographical relationship between the branch mints and where their coins circulate, so....)

it s right that the desing changed in 1950 from " bank deutscher länder" ( 1948/1949) to "bundesrepublik deutschland" ..
the next 1 pfennig comes in 1966 .. the value of the 1 pf 1950 D was 772,59 mio. pieces ..

I wonder if I might ask about what year the 1-pfennig and 2-pfennig of the Bundesrepublik fell out of circulation? And did the 5- and 10-pfennig continue to circulate until the advent of the euro?

Perhaps I should post it under the DDR section, but please let me renew my question about the "Gluckspfennig" here...was the DDR 1-pfennig also regarded as a "lucky penny," or "Gluckspfennig?"

Hello villa66,

they never fell out of circulation and whre normally used every day for example in the supermarket and backery. The Usage stopped with the introdution of the Euro.
There was a traditon in Germany that shoes for Brides would be payed only with 1 Pfennig coins to bring luck into the marriage. Today this tradion is with 1 Cent coins.
