On the known antoniniani with this type at Rome, the radiate crown is also present on the lion skin, while it does not appear on the present coin. That said, it appears that die used for the present coin may have been an ad-hoc creation. One may observe that there are traces of a radiate crown visible in some spots, particularly in at the back of Gallienus' head, where the ties normally occur. At the same time, the face and letters exhibit a light amout of die wear, in that their details are not very sharp, while the elements of the lion skin, particularly the mane, are very sharp. This suggests that this coin was probably struck with a normal, radiate crown obverse die (typical for this series) that had been used for some time before the die was re-engraved with the lion skin. In this way, we can account for the remaining radiate crown elements, as well as the sharpness of the details in the lion mane in relation to the rest of the obverse.
