Thanks so much, Sigi, for the strong explanation of “Dittchen,” I much appreciate your time and trouble—and depth of knowledge.

Charmed me on several levels and filled my head with pictures of olden times. (Grandfathers doling out coins from over-size rocking chairs, and mothers in aprons working between dark wood tables and big iron stoves, pausing to fish a couple of coins from a jar to send out with a child on an errand—or to get them out from underfoot.)

Best was when it finally occurred to me that “Dittchen” was a word some of my own people might once have used themselves.

The Terms "Zwickel" and "Heiermann" I had heard about the first time when I earned money as a cab-driver during the 1980s. These words were used by other cab-drivers and customers of lower classes, waitresses and women who offered more physical services. They called the 5-Mark-Note, which was still in use "Pestfünfer" and disliked them. My wife told me that she heard "Heiermann" only from me whereas "Zwickel" she remembers was used by students and workers mostly in connection with buying cigarettes from machines ("Hast du mal einen Zwickel für Kippen?") - As there is no 5 euro coin the "Heiermann" will die out. I remember the little green 5DM note, but also remember it was just about finished when I arrived early in '84. I remember hearing it was unpopular, but don't remember hearing why.

I wonder if it's correct to regard the paper 5DM as a bridge between the Silberadler--which as a big silver coin must surely have encountered difficulties circulating as the '70s progressed--and the copper-nickel (magnimat!) 5DM that replaced it?

Also so eine Art " Grönland- Dollar " ? ( Das 1944 in Philadelphia geprägte Fünfkronenstück, dass überhaupt nicht in das damalige dänische Münzsystem passte, entsprach genau einem US- Dollar und war für die Bedürfnisse der auf Grönland stationierten US- Truppen gedacht ).
Kannst Du diese hoch interessante Behauptung anhand von Berichten oder Artikeln untermauern ? Ich erinnere mich aus meiner Kindheit daran, dass der Fünfmarkschein fast nie im Umlauf vorkam, allerdings auf den Banken vorrätig war. Als mein Neffe Ende der 70er Jahre konfirmiert wurde, bekam er von meiner Schwester ein Geldbäumchen mit von der Bank geholten Papierfünfern. Ansonsten fiel mir immer auf, dass der Fünfmarkschein der ersten Bundesbankserie in deutlich geringeren Auflagen gedruckt wurde, als die übrigen Nominale.

Nein, die Dinger wurden auch bei der Bundeswehr ausgegeben. Ich habe in 1979/80 Sold auch noch bar ausbezahlt bekommen. Es ging darum, das Gewicht für Geldtransporte möglichst klein zu halten. Grüße, KarlAntonMartini

Hauptargument war im Einzelhandel immer die Aufteilung der Kassenlade:

Münzen: 1, 2, 5, 10, 50 Pfennig, 1, 2 und 5 Mark
Banknoten: 10, 20, 50 und 100 DM

Da passten die 5-DM-Scheine (wie auch die 10-DM-Gedenkmünzen) nirgendwo in die Kasse.

Nichts desto trotz, ich mochte die Papierfünfer gern und bestand als Kind teilweise auf Auszahlung des Taschengeld es "in kleinen Scheinen", also in Papierfünfern.

Weight is always an issue for soldiers, and as a general rule, of course, the lighter the better. But thinking back on my own days as an infantryman, I note another advantage of paper money over coin: noise.

Whenever we were graded during an exercise, our noise discipline was an important part of our score. So one of our routine preparations was removing coins from our pockets.

Remembering this makes me wonder about something I recently posted here on the Forum about the big French coppers of WWI, and how American soldiers had nicknamed the 10-centimes "clackers" and the 5-centimes "little-clackers."

I notice that the nickname has as an element the idea of loud noise, so I wonder if American troops--before an action--were ever reminded to get rid of their clackers.
