Charmed me on several levels and filled my head with pictures of olden times. (Grandfathers doling out coins from over-size rocking chairs, and mothers in aprons working between dark wood tables and big iron stoves, pausing to fish a couple of coins from a jar to send out with a child on an errand—or to get them out from underfoot.)
Best was when it finally occurred to me that “Dittchen” was a word some of my own people might once have used themselves.
